Is there a role for higher education in mitigating conspiracist ideation, by promoting analytical thinking? Conspiracy theories represent an intricate framework used to accuse individuals or organisations of covertly achieving a hidden goal, that can be viewed as malignant (Zonis & Joseph, 1994). Such ideations often pertain to the notion of government cover-ups (e.g. 9/11 was an inside job), extra-terrestrial life or negative racial stereotypes (e.g. Muslims and Jews). Past research has indicated that beliefs in such ideations hold the potential to increase an individual’s aggressive and anti-social behaviours (van der Linden, 2015).
