intro: Goffman and Freud’s work in differing psychological and sociological spheres allow us to comprehend and analyse how one’s individual identity is formed. Their respective research, despite being in two different fields, provides deeper insight into identity formation, with Goffman exploring identity through role performance, face-to-face interaction, embarrassment and frame analysis, and Freud exploring the process of one’s consciousness and unconsciousness, the concept of ID, ego and superego, dreaming and drive theory. Both theories in contrast provide a worthy line of inquiry into individual identity, and when analysed together provide avenues to better inform our understanding. Upon explanation and comparison of each approach one can identify the strengths and weaknesses of both Goffman and Freud’s approaches to study, and the merits therein. - got me 74/100
