1500 words essay- Explain the difference between interactionalist dualism, epiphenomenalism and parallelism. Discuss the costs and benefits of each of these theories

PHIL1011 - Reality, Ethics and Beauty

7 Pages Essays / Projects Year Uploaded: 2022

Essay on interactionalist dualism, epiphenomenalism and parallelism. Received 80%/100% Distinction mark Just made a couple of mistakes within my argument that I have mentioned as well as the comments from the tutor. 1. in my first paragraph: comment- "Galen lived and died long before Descartes was around - so don't phrase your arguments as if Galen was responding directly to Descartes in his work!" 2. In my first paragraph: comment- "You should recognise more epxlicitly here that while this description of the pineal gland specifically might be wrong, that doesn't answer the broader question of whether interactionism itself is right or wrong" 3.In my first paragraph (from where I wrote 'he concluded that because of') comment- "You've made a fairly serious error here: this is a parallelist theory, not an interactionist one! " 4.In my first paragraph: comment- "You don't recognise one of the most important arguments against interactionism, which is the causal closure of the physical. This is a problem, since this argument is important again for epiphenomenalists, and you don't acknowledge this point clearly below either." 5. In my second paragraph (from where I wrote 'individuals with an atheistic background') comment- "These arguments are the right ones to focus on, but you're a bit quick running through them. Need a bit more space dedicated to this section, to make these arguments more clear."
