Biomedical Application (Heart Beat) Notes

MECH3660 - Manufacturing Engineering

6 Pages Topic Notes Year: Pre-2021

-Monitoring blood pressure -Blood Pressure Monitoring–Case Study -How doctors measure blood pressure -How a machine measures blood pressure 1) Inflate cuff to a pressure above systolic pressure to stop the blood flow 2) Slowly deflate the cuff while continually measuring the slight pressure oscillations caused by the heart beating. These oscillations will only be obvious between systolic and diastolic cuff pressure. 3) Using the pressure-volume curve that depicts the elastic nature of arteries, convert each pressure pulse to a volume pulse. 4) Find the largest volume pulse. This will correspond to the mean blood pressure as it relates to the case where the cuff pressure was equal to blood pressure. 5) Using a database of historical data, convert the mean blood pressure to systolic and diastolic pressure values.
