• To recognise that activation of T cells for a T cell-mediated immune response is required to combat intracellular microbes • To be able to link what you learnt in Theme 2 to explain why: - CD8+ Cytotoxic T lymphocytes combat cytoplasmic microbes like viruses - CD4+ T helper cells combat bacteria that have been taken up by phagocytes • To appreciate the importance of the immunological synapse to T cell activation • To be able to recall the name and function of the key molecules involved in each of the 4 steps that lead to T cell activation: Step 1: Antigen Recognition Step 2: Co-receptors and adhesion molecules Step 3: TCR complex Signalling Step 4: Co-stimulation • To understand that clonal expansion & differentiation following activation generates both effector & memory T cells & be able to describe the differences between them • To appreciate that T cell activation must be tightly controlled
