Introduction How does the change in external environment affect a person’s national identity This report investigates such change among Chinese international students in Sydney. It will focus on one independent variable which contribute to such change, namely state propaganda. Before discussing the hypothesis of the research, it is important to explain the nature of nationalism in China. China has become increasingly nationalistic since early 1990s. There are two schools explaining the phenomenon. Some scholars suggest that previous humiliations in the colonisation era contribute to the rise of nationalism in China. This motivates Chinese people to take revenge against the West (Bernstein & Munro, 1997; Friedman, 1997; Lilley, 1996).
