AVBS1003 - Animals and Us

45 Pages University of Sydney Complete Study Notes Year Uploaded: 2018

Full semester notes Horse: equitation science Horse behaviours have been selected for pastures, hunting grounds and battlefields. Selection primarily for physical appearance may have unexpected consequences. Better to select horse for a range of traits that suit a variety of rider personalities and skills. Traditional equestrian techniques, although effective, may be inhumane. Rewards can reduce basic drive (e.g. hunger, pain, thirst, ect) and thus reinforce responses to gain them. I.e. horses turn when a rein is pulled because doing so helps to reduce the pressure in the mouth, nose or ear. There are two major categories of learning: non-associative (involving a single stimulus) that can be either habituation and sensitisation; and associative (involving a relationship between at least two stimuli becoming established) – can either be classical (Pavlovian) or operant (instrumental) conditioning.
