ARGUMENT AGAINST THE RELIABILITY AND ACCURACY OF HUMAN MEMORY: MIS/LEADING QUESTIONS. Research in cognitive psychology over the years has revealed that memory is a highly complex phenomenon that is not always an accurate record of our experiences (Sammons, 2006). People’s memories are fallible and open to suggestion (Associated Press, 2003). There are many factors that can influence and alter the accuracy of a person’s recollection of events. Two significant factors include 1) the phrasing of questions about the event, and 2) the introduction of misleading post-event information about an event. This essay draws upon the experimental research of Loftus and Palmer (1974), and Weinberg, Wadsworth, and Baron (1983) to examine those factors and demonstrate the unreliability of memory and its susceptibility to influence. Loftus and Palmer (Greene, 1992) found that by using different words when asking participants about a vehicle collision they had viewed notably affected their estimation of the speed the cars were travelling.
