In this investigation you will start by investigating the magnetic field surrounding and inside a bar magnet and the Earth. This investigation is designed to give you an understanding of: • Magnetic field’s • Faraday’s law • Generators Equipment For this experiment you will need a couple of simulations that can be downloaded for free from the PhET site. Got to http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/magnet-and-compass and http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/faraday Download these simulations. Relationship between magnetic field strength and distance The three graphs above shows there is an inverse relationship between distance and magnetic field strength. And as the distance increase, the magnetic field strength appears exponential decay. This means that the strength of magnetic field is weak if we go further from the magnetic pole, and eventually approach 0.
