Critically Evaluated Academic Essay on the Article Written By Pfeffer and Veiga (1999) on "Putting People First)

This student studied:
Deakin University - MMM132 - Management

In this essay, I will discuss and critically evaluate the seven practices introduced by Pfeffer and Veiga (1999), in their article “Putting People First”, with reference to Henri Fayol’s 14 principles of management followed by philosophies brought forward by theorists such as F. W. Taylor (1856-1915), Max Webber (1864-1920), Mary Parker Follett (868-1933) and Douglas McGregor (1906-1964), in order to identify their practicality for modern managers. Structure of this essay will be analyzing the seven practices brought forward by Pfeffer and Veiga (1999) individually, while correlating and contradicting each practice with arguments and findings from different experts in management. Taken together, the view point of this essay communicates that the findings of Pfeffer and Veiga (1999) can be used by managers in today’s context, yet there are drawbacks that will prove some practices to be obsolete. Consequently, in reality, modern managers are unable to follow one set of practices, rather they would practice a combination of management theories in order to achieve success.
