Firstly, every organisation has a distinct purpose. This purpose is typically expressed in terms of a goal that the organisation hopes to accomplish. Secondly, each organisation is composed of people. One person working alone is not an organisation. It takes multiple people to perform the work that is necessary to achieve the purpose. Third, every organisation develops some deliberate structure. This structure can be open with no clear job duties or there can be a structure with strict adherence to explicit jobs. This structure can be a simple network of loose relationships (Google, IKEA) or tight clear duties (BHP Billiton, Westpac).
