In order to students to learn a certain subject or a certain aspect, students need to process the information, understand and finally apply it. For this to happen there are certain procedures that occur so students are able to acquire knowledge and these two procedures are called working memory, encoding and retrieval. Working memory also known as short- term memory is concerned with having the capacity to maintain the information within the brain consciously for a short time an example would be when trying to multiply 12 and 12 without using any equipment such as paper, pencil or even a calculator. ( Alloway & Gathercole, 2007, Page 4- 5) Alan Baddeley was a psychologist who proposed a model of working memory, which encompasses three sections: the executive control system, which is the control system and commands the stimulus that enters the working memory. ( Bruning, Schraw,Norby,2011, pg 26) It also governs the ‘two salve systems, which is the visualspatial sketchpad and the articulatory loop. (Baddeley, 1974 ) The first slave system holds visual images and conducts various calculation of that information for example rotating the image. While the second slave system holds acoustic information approximately 2-4 seconds by rehearsal. These three systems achieve the mental functioning of the working memory. (Ayres, 2012, page 6 ( powerpoint) )
