FOCAL THINKERS: JOHN MAYNARD KEYNES & ALFRED MARSHALL In the past decade, the issue of housing affordability and supply has been a hotly debated topic in Australia. At the centre of these debates, there lies the question of whether or not the Government should intervene in the housing market to prevent a potential bubble from bursting, and if intervention is required, what policies should be implemented. In this essay we’ll be using the economic thoughts of Alfred Marshall and John Maynard Keynes to answer these difficult questions. However, before we begin our analysis, it is critical that we understand both the roots to the problem of housing affordability and the economic framework of our two focal thinkers.
