What is international business?
‘Any commercial transaction that crosses the borders of two or more nations’
Types of IB Transactions
- Transactions: exchange of
values between seller and buyer, typically involving intermediaries and currency (both inter-firm and intra- firm transactions)
- What is exchanged?
Goods, services, capital, technology, ideas, know-how, intellectual property (IP)
- How? Importing/exporting, investment, contractual arrangements
Relevance of Borders
Types of Boundaries
- Political (state): denote
sovereignty, legal jurisdiction
- Economic: eroded due to
globalization? Still most take
place within borders
- Cultural: coincide with
national boundaries?
- Psychological: boundaries of
‘mind and habit’
Sovereignty at bay? Supranational organisations (UN, WTO, EU etc.)
