Life started on Earth 3.5 billion years ago, as opposed to the solar system which is 4.6 billion years old. The universe has been around 30.6 billion years! The fossil record disintegrates about 3 billion years ago, giving us a limited view of life history. Characteristics of Life  Reproduce  Grow and develop  Respond to stimuli  Are made up of the 4 essential chemicals in life: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids  Composed of cells: bacteria are a micron (1 thousandth of a millimetre) thick, animals cells are 20 microns, and plant cells are 50 microns Taxonomy  Whittaker’s 1969 five-kingdom system  Woess’ 1977 three-domain system  Carl Woess analysed rRNA and to reconstruct the tree of life o Bacteria can cause disease and are smaller than eukaryotes o Archaea are the prokaryotes of extreme environments (extremophiles), living in places like swamps and hot springs. They include halophiles, thermophiles and methanogens o Eukarya includes three multicellular kingdoms: plantae, fungi and animalia. Others are grouped as protista, which are now grouped into separate kingdoms Evolution by Natural Selection Charles Darwin proposed this in The Origin of Species 1859, and showed evolutionary relationships between species; we all descended from a common ancestor. 1. Species reproduce with variations in the offspring 2. Favourable characteristics lead to the individuals surviving 3. Those adapted best pass on such traits from parent to offspring 4. Evolution of the species Anthropods also make up a huge portion of the species of life, including insects and crustaceans. They are eukaryotic and have exoskeletons made of carbohydrates (some even use sodium carbonate). They are arguably the most successful organisms living.
