Following Mitchell Duneir’s “sidewalk”, he shed a light on the everyday life of black men (mostly) who sells scavenged written materials on the streets of New York City. From his extraordinary study, he made the “familiar”, unfamiliar of the common perceptions we have about these men. In this modern, graceful society of ours, it is unfortunate to say that there is indeed a stigma (that we created) that is attached to these people (‘sidewalkers’). This is illustrated by the many encounters Duneier’s had with them. They were denied entry to restroom toilets, often targeted by police officers and sadly, often ignored by majority of society. Borrowing Durkheim’s “What is a social fact?” (1999), this essay seeks to explain the cause and effect of the daily hardships encountered by these men exerted by the very structures they live in, which is society. This is followed by discussing the implications these phenomena brings, along with my personal concluding thoughts about phenomena in question.
