Individual Report D - 1st Sub

Gray (1988) developed four accounting values associated with accounting subculture to relate to Hofstede’s four societal values. The four accounting values are Professionalism versus Statutory Control, Uniformity versus Flexibility, Conservatism versus Optimism and Secrecy versus Transparency. However, only Conservatism versus Optimism and Secrecy versus Transparency values will be considered in analysing the difference in accounting practices. The other two values will not be able to explain the difference in accounting practices of the two firms as they are closely related to the requirements of the accounting standards, and the firms will have little control over these differences. The purpose of financial statements are to provide a true and fair reflection of a company’s financial position. Both companies have managed to do so according to the auditors’ opinions. However, the difference between Melbourne IT Limited (MLB) and Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) is that CSC provided additional review and analysis of their past financial performances (Computer Sciences Corporation 2013, pg 21-56). This helps investors obtain a clearer picture of the financial health of the company without having to do additional analysis on the financial statements. The reason for this difference is due to the firm having a consumer-focused cultural approach to their financial statements. This is further backed by the company’s CLEAR values where they are client-focused and accept responsibility for results (Computer Sciences Corporation 2013, pg 7). Meanwhile, MLB discloses in its financial reports what is required within AASB without an in-depth review of its financial performance. Such financial statements do not suggest secrecy but it does suggest that CSC favours transparency more than MLB does and hence, goes beyond what is required to be publicly accountable.
