Group Report Second Submission
Equity Financial Instruments
In addition to Debt, equity financial instruments is an alternative financing method. There are
numerous intricacies surrounding equity instruments such as the classification of preference
shares or accounting for equity component in compound financial instruments. The
classification has a direct impact on financial statement ratios. Yet, equity instruments are
relatively under-developed compared to financial assets and liabilities. The lack of coverage
or guidance of equity in standards implies more discretion for companies in applying
accounting practices regarding this item.
Overall, we did not receive a lot of comments for our group report. In response to question 5
of the peer assessment, they said our reports had shown some improper use of tense, clauses
and words but did not give specific examples. We have proofread the reports many times to
minimize these errors.
In response to question 6 where we were criticized for lacking evidence, elaboration and
comparison of equity instruments. We have rewritten the whole equity section by expanding
our analysis to recognition, measurement, presentation and disclosure. Also, we integrate the
comparison of accounting practices of 8 companies in each section for comparison.
