How did the Greeks acquire their slaves and how did they treat them? Could Greek civilisation have survived if slavery had been abolished? Slaves could be acquired in a variety of ways, and this will be discussed below. Generally slaves were given no consideration, though this could vary, and the way in which they were treated depended on several factors. Slavery is one of the central factors in the success of ancient Greece, and helotage facilitated the formation of Sparta and its culture. We cannot be sure of the numbers of slaves in ancient Greece, but we do know that the population of slaves was significant, with slave labour accompanying free labour.
