Electrochemistry is the study of chemical reactions of which generate electricity and also the chemical reactions that are caused by an electrical current. An electrochemical cell known as a Galvanic Cell or Voltaic Cell collects energy from random reduction and oxidation reactions that take place within the cell. These cells commonly include two metals, one of which is the anode, which becomes oxidised, or loses electrons, and the other is the cathode which becomes reduced, or gains electrons, and also a salt bridge, which is required to maintain electrical neutrality. Galvanic cells produce electricity by transferring an electron from the anode to the cathode, and the electrical current is carried by charged ions from the solutions. In this practical, a Galvanic Cell compromised of the metals copper and zinc, the solutions copper sulphate and zinc sulphate and a salt bridge of potassium chloride will be investigated, and the affect the copper sulphate’s concentration has on the number of micro amps will be explored.
