Auditory Localisation - Report Write Up Short
Unlike sensory information processed by the visual system, the auditory system contains no topographic mapping representation of stimuli location. Alternatively, sounds locations are processed through the use of acoustical cues present at the two ears. In the comprehensive study conducted by Yao (2007) investigation into the effect of auditory localisation on spatial semantic information was explored with the participation of ten young adult volunteers across two experiments. This was initially conducted by presenting the words “right”, “left”, “front”, “back” and “yes” as well as a tone, from the locations on the left, right, front or back locations while monitoring their whole body orientation toward the stimuli. Formerly, experiment two identified the effect of four spatial semantic words either presented from the matched location or from a location 200 anticlockwise. Using the Polhemus Fastrak system, head movements were recorder in three dimensions. Findings suggested that confusions occur between front and back locations, thus errors in interaural axis.
