EFB223 - Economics 2
8 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
Up until late 2016, Australia was one of the few remaining prawn farmers free of White Spot Disease (WPD). However, in late November 2016, Queensland’s Biosecurity Sciences Laboratory identified WSD. This disease is highly contagious and is spread by by movement of contaminated water and infected animals, including birds and crustaceans. WSD is exotic to Australia and poses a massive threat to the prawn industry with a mortality rate of ninety percent in farms. In the past months since the initial infection, the disease has spread to South East Queensland and to at least one hundred wild Black Tiger Prawns.
