The lesson builds on their prior knowledge of division and simple fractions with the use of number lines in these instances (e.g. showing half way between 1 and 2 on a number line and being able to explain this in fractions). The proficiency strand embedded within the lesson is understanding which is defined in the Australian Curriculum by “making connections between representations of numbers, partitioning and combining numbers flexibility, extending place value to decimals, using appropriate language to communicate times and describing properties of symmetrical shapes.” (“The Australian Curriculum 8.3”, 2017), and covers the Stage 2 outcome of the NSW syllabus MA2-12MG which states “A student: measures, records, compares and estimates the masses of objects using kilograms and grams” (“NSW Board”, 201...

Field Observation and Reflection Report Part A

This student studied:
University of New South Wales - EDST2002 - Professional Engagement

Final Mark: 24/40 - extra marks deducted due to late submission Marker's Comment: Observation1: Introduction includes details of setting and focus of observation. The description omits details of the lesson. Some misinterpretation of what is meant by learner as doer - is not only active participation but consideration of what is involved in each learning activity for the learner e.g., cognitive, affective, social or psycho-motor skills. The analysis needs to focus on these aspects of learner as doer as well as active participation and reflection needs to consider what you learned about how teachers address the learner as doer from the observation. (14/20) Observation2: Introduction includes details of setting and f ocus of observation. Choosing to do 4 openings and closings means that important details have been lef t out of each description. The analysis of the opening seems to have been interpreted in terms of learning principles rather than teaching. The analysis of closing makes some good points but needs to be linked to examples and interpreted in light of relevant research literature. The reflections include several point of learning from the analysis of the observation. Some minor issues with APA referencing. (14/20)

Video Observation and Reflections

This student studied:
University of New South Wales - EDST2002 - Professional Engagement

Final Grade 12/20 -- lost extra marks for late submission Markers Comment: Introduction needs to include description of physical setting - can tell about teacher's approach f rom this. The description is clearly written and covers details of events in video, but has some analysis and interpretation. Saying a learning principle has been addressed is not enough you need to explain how it was addressed using examples from the video in pref erence to example and arguments from the literature. The reflection would be improved by stepping back and considering the overall picture with regard to learning principles - i.e., teachers don't address in isolation - many likely to be addressed in one lesson.
