Telecommuting is a home-based work arrangement that enables employees to spend part or all of their time working at home, either on a temporary or permanent basis (Introducing Workplace Flexibility, 2013). This work arrangement has grown significantly due to new technologies, growth in telecommuting professions and an increasing pressure on companies to cut costs and increase employee productivity (Ye, 2012; Working at home: An Update, 2008). Research has shown that in 2008, 1,748,600 people worked from home, compared with 425,700 in 2000 (Working at home: An Update, 2008) and that parents, part-time workers and women are more inclined to partake in this practice (Skinner, Hutchinson & Pocock, 2012, p. 11). However, telecommuting does not suit all professions. There are both advantages and disadvantages.
