Is the media the most significant policy actor in Australian policy making today? Introduction The political process of policymaking has often seen to be affected by a number of social and economic factors with the media playing an integral role in moulding the context to which these policies are developed. The tie between governments and their citizens is often through media as they educate the people on new policies and programs while also receiving feedback on where to improve. Australia has seen the media used as a primary conduit for those who wish to influence the policymaking process and policymakers who control the scope of political discourse for the country. With the improvement of information accessibility through the internet, Australian news media has had both a direct and indirect relationship with the Australian government (McCallum, K & Waller, L 2013). This new form of media consumption differs to the traditional political change in that it has seen to focus more on the relationships between politics, the citizens, and the repercussions of certain government actions instead of focusing on elections, voting and public opinion. This essay aims to look at two specific cases, the recent Australian Federal Police (AFP) raid on ABC journalists as well as Brittany Higgins allegations against a staff member of parliament, and how the media has dominated public opinion and how specific subtleties in the forms of media have influenced Australian policymaking. By employing an analytical framework of agenda-setting theory, this essay will discuss the role of the media’s democratic values and how these can shape public opinion in Australia.
