Quasi-experimental study examining strength of illusion in University students after inducing local/global processing via music

PSY4081 - Perception and Cognition

12 Pages Essays / Projects Year Uploaded: 2022

Abstract Perception forms an important part of our everyday life, without it, we would be unable to organise and interpret information in the same way, changing the way we think and operate, including how we recognise situations and patterns. These same mechanisms that allow us to perceive, are also fallable. The aim is to influence processing on a local/global level by inducing mood via music. Using convenience sampling we recruited 870 Monash psychology students (185 male, 683 female, 2 other) aged between 21 and 73 (M = 36.48, SD = 8.85). Participants were spread across three groups, global (happy music), local (sad music) and control (no music) before completing a muller-lyer experiment. Although our research showed no significant results, the study is novel in that we used music to affect processing styles. We make suggestions for future research which we hope will produce more fruitful results.
