Consequently, age discrimination is a significant concern for employees in the 21st century and is affecting both young and mature workers in their pursuit to break into the work industry and maintain their jobs. Thus, age discrimination is occurring in almost every workplace (Bayl-Smith & Griffin, 2014) despite the current legislative barriers in place. Current legislation regarding this matter include The Equal Opportunity Act 2010, which declared age as a personal characteristic that if discriminated against would be considered unlawful (Australian Government – Fair Work Ombudsman, 2014) and the Age Discrimination Act 2004 (Cth) which expresses prohibition of unfair treatment in employment on the basis of age, applying to both young and older workers alike.
