1 It is through forgiveness that a person who has been wronged can overcome feelings of anger and resentment, and transform them into kindness and love once again. It is therefore the prerogative of the wronged to accept a wrongdoer’s remorse and forgive them, if they feel that the wrongdoer is deserving of it. I will be arguing that this sort of interpersonal forgiveness is not obligatory as it would be senseless to impose a kind of moral duty on a person, who has been wronged, to change their involuntary and justified negative attitudes towards the person who has wronged them. It is something which the wronged person must endeavour to do. Thus, the active nature of the process of forgiveness on the wronged person’s part implies that it is a choice for them to make.
