The only natural way to resolve this issue is to regard him as more than one person, and take each segment of time as a different person. What unites the segments of a time traveller is the same sort of mental continuity and connectedness that unites every other person. THe only difference is that whereas a common person is connected and continuous with respect to external time, the time traveller is connected and continuous only with respect to his personal time. Taking the stages in order, mental and bodily change is gradual rather than sudden, and at no point is there sudden change in too many aspects at once.
