Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and is conducted annually by Muslims as a religious duty. It evokes spiritual saturation and physical distress for pilgrims and the community as it takes them on a quest for enlightenment and greater understanding. Hajj is a quest for redemption and spirituality, strengthening the relationship between God and the pilgrim by removing sins enabling ultimate rebirth and communal rejuvenation. It eliminates all aspects of social and racial discrimination uniting all Muslim in the prayer for one God, (Allah) whilst for individuals it portrays the search for the greater truth and ultimately acts as a process of self identification. There are a number of rites of Hajj which are elaborate symbolizing the key concepts of Islam as it retraces the footsteps of the Prophet Abraham’s wife Haja and son Ishmael in Saudi Arabia. Each aspect of Hajj holds a deeper significance in terms of a pilgrim’s spirituality and the understanding formed in a community (umma), impacting each differently.
