This essay explores the concepts of repression, suppression, and their differences; the accuracy of recovered unconscious memories, and the possibilities of memory implantation. These topics have been explored by examining research reports, essays, and journal articles in the fields of memory, trauma and repression. It is argued that while transference of memories from the conscious to unconscious mind occurs, it is mostly through the less-widely considered process of suppression rather than the more “popular” repression (both terms defined in text). Further research is recommended in the areas of implantation and unconscious memory in order to better understand how these two concepts interplay.
