2007CCJ - Sociology of Crime

6 Pages 3 Students Found this helpful Griffith University Essay / Project Year Uploaded: 2018

Example: According to Surette the “empirical reality of predator crime” is in fact serious, however it does not provide a good representation of crime as a whole. For example, the number of murders has been increasing over the past thirty years, however, even with this increase, murder only accounts for about one-forth of one percent of all violent crime. Thus, according to statistics the reality is that predator crime is not as serious as the public may think, however due to wide spread media, society’s view of predator crime has been distorted and in this case is known as the “empirical reality of predator crime” (Surette & Barak, 1994).
