The alcohol consumption levels in Australia are increasing so much that alcohol is often referred to as the most frequently used recreational drug used within Australia (Australian Drug Federation, 2014). The drinking culture in Australia is considered a social norm, and the Australian institute of Criminology (2017) says that Australians these days are just drinking to get drunk. Where’s in other countries such Italy, drinking is usually involved in mealtimes and isn’t done in excessive amounts (Marsh & Stefanou, 2016). This essay will firstly assess a number of authoritative sources in relation to binge drinking and how it socially impacts the Australian public from a symbolic interactionist viewpoint. Secondly, through the research about binge drinking and the gathering of evidence, this essay will present the association about how symbolic interactionism is associated with the binge drinking problems that Australia is faced with.
