Essay on Homelessness and Symbolic Interactionism Homelessness is a prominent and ongoing global problem that impacts societies as it exceeds beyond an individual’s personal discomfort or disadvantage. To such degree, homelessness is considered to be a social problem (Anderson, Fillipovic, & Finnerty, 2016). According to Herbert Blumer (1971), a social problem is something that is seen as harmful or of malignant nature in comparison to a normal healthy social society. Symbolic interactionist theory illustrates a strong explanation for the causes of homelessness; it presents arguments for those that are in the homeless population by considering issues of judgement and labelling (Anderson & Snow, 2001). This essay will firstly discuss homelessness as a social problem in Australia, secondly it will then go on to explain social interactionist theory and finally, this essay will apply the theory of social interactionism and labelling theory to homelessness as a social problem.
