According to Hoops (2012) excessive alcohol consumption in Australia is a culturally accepted phenomenon which has led to it being the most widely used recreational drug. However, unlike other drugs, the lack of stigma surrounding alcohol consumption due to its positive associations within Australian culture has contributed to the belief that it is not a drug (Hoops, 2012). This has led to the increase of dangerous levels of consumption in Australia (Hoops, 2012). This resulting attitude means binge drinking has become increasingly popular, which impacts society through high levels of alcohol fuelled violence (Hoops, 2012). The purpose of this essay will seek to argue that binge drinking is a social problem within Australia, to achieve this the essay will discuss the effects binge drinking has on an individual’s health, and the effects binge drinking has on society. Further, this essay will discuss the theory of symbolic interactionism, in understanding this concept this essay will then apply it to explain binge drinking within an Australian context.
