In this article, Glanz et al. (2010) demonstrate a research study which aimed to quantify the risk of varicella infection related medical care in children whose parents refuse varicella immunisations both from individual and attributable level. The authors used a matched case-control design with conditional logistic regression analysis to analyze the disposition of varicella infection when relevant immunisation is refused among members of Kaiser Permanente of Colorado (KPCO) health plan between 1998 and 2008. The authors gathered data regarding varicella vaccination status for both cases and controls retrospectively from the index date, and all these medical records of cases and controls were reviewed by a trained medical records abstractor who was blinded to varicella case status. There were 133 diagnosed varicella cases selected, and 493 controls were randomly matched to cases by age, sex, and length of enrollment. As concluded in the article, the authors found that there was a strong association between parental varicella vaccine refusal and the risk of childhood varicella disease, and children whose parents refuse varicella immunisations are at higher risk of varicella infection compared with vaccinated children.
