Interferometry Report
PHYS2005 - Electromagnetism
8 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
This experiment investigates the interference patterns of a laser beam and the data that can be derived from it. The aim of this experiment is to determine the wavelength of a given laser by counting the fringes of an interference pattern produced by the laser in the Michelson mode set up, and, then, to determine the index of refraction for a given glass slab by placing a glass slab on a rotating plate in front of the moving mirror and counting the number of fringes that passes through a reference point and measuring the angle change of the rotating plate. The effects of a polarizer are observed to diffuse the light beam. The wavelength was calculated to be 6.70 x 10^(-7) ± 5x10^(-8) m, and the index of refraction of the glass was 1.66 ± 0.05. Both results are higher than the expected theoretical values, however, both values are accepted as the difference between the calculated and theoretical values are within the uncertainty boundaries.
