The objective of this experiment is to determine the percentage of chromium present in the given sample of chromite by decomposing the chromite using sodium peroxide and then back titrating the solution. The decomposition of chromite is as follows: 2 Fe(CrO4) + O22 CrO42- + 2 FeO And therefore chromium is formed and can be reacted with acid to form dichromate: 2 CrO42- + 2 H+ Cr2O72- + H2O The dichromate can then be used to calculate the chromium content in chromite by the back titration of the dichromate solution, where the ammonium sulphate solution added to the dichromate solution made is standardised with potassium. The reaction mechanism of this process is: 6 Fe2+ + Cr2O72- + 14H3O+ 6Fe3+ + 2 Cr3+ + 21 H2O This gives a 1 :2 ratio of the dichromate solution and the chromium ions, therefore the molar value of chromium can be calculated.
