synthesis of a metal complex
The aim of this experiment is to successfully synthesize Potassium trioxalatocobaltiate (III) by utilising simple preparation techniques and to then analyse the metal complex by using a magnetic balance, Infrared spectroscopy, Ultraviolet visible spectrum spectroscopy and Atomic Absorption spectroscopy and to investigate the purity of the sample and by analysing the obtained data to propose a chemical structure for the Potassium trioxalatocobaltiate (III). The magnetic moment of the sample was calculated using the equation, µexpt = 2.83√(X'T), where X’ is the corrected susceptibility of the molecular weight and the gram susceptibility. The value of the calculated magnetic moment can then be compared to the theoretical magnetic moment obtained from the equation: µs =√(n(n+2)).
