Do Children Develop a Theory of Mind Before 3 Years of Age?
Given the importance of theory of mind in social cognition, particular attention has
been drawn to investigate its development and onset within children. Despite the
presence of early supporting mechanisms in infancy, the standard false-belief task
concluded that a conceptual change occurs between the ages of 3 – 5 years-old, for
a representational theory of mind. However, with the arise of alternative paradigms in
the study of theory of mind and limitations in the standard false-belief task, greater
evidence for an early-competence theory of mind has been raised – one where
children below 3-years-old can exhibit through spontaneous-responses to falsebelief.
