I do not bother with what I do at school, probably’: Investigating impression management strategies in secondary school girls. A Thematic Analysis.

The data used in this research were taken from an existing dataset collected by Jackson (2004) as part of an ESRC funded study investigating whether secondary school girls are adopting ‘laddish’ behaviours and attitudes. As far as the participants are concerned, secondary school girls who aged between 13 and 14 were invited to this research. The interviews were done on a one-to-one, and face-to-face basis and audios were recorded. Moreover, they were being asked by semi-structured questions including attitudes and approaches to schoolwork; SATS; pressures in school; ‘lads’ and ‘ladettes’; friends and popularity. Subsequently, three participants’ interviews were chosen from the sample while they were all in different secondary schools in the north of England. Audiotapes of the interviews were transcribed in full. Thematic analysis (TA) is used to analyse the data in this research because of its flexibility of not linking to any epistemology or theoretical perspective.
