Abstract Some psychologists argued that contempt and disgust were the same emotions but some argued it vice versa. This study was conducted and looked at the relationship between the emotions of contempt and disgust and the level of active harm. It was hypothesized that the group with disgust would elicit higher level of active harm than the group with contempt. A between-group design and opportunity sample were used. The independent variable is Monroes viewed with disgust or contempt and the dependent variable is the level of active harm. This sample contained 142 participants but one excluded due to the incomplete data so only 141 participants were in this study. They were separated to two groups that have distinct emotions and asked to complete a questionnaire. The results indicated that the emotions of contempt and disgust were the same emotions and did not have any significant differences in the ratings of active harm, t(139) = -.92, p = 0.18 (one-tailed) and a small effect, d = 0.16 (see appendix A).
