Magistracies on the curses honour held responsibility for different aspects of government. Discuss (20marks)

Classical Civilisation

4 Pages Essays / Projects Year Uploaded: 2023

In this essay I have answered the one of the key questions posed by classicists. In this essay I have discussed the following points more elaborately and linked them to the government positions of today: The cursus honorum was the sequential order of public offices held by aspiring politicians in the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire. It was designed for men of senatorial rank and comprised a mixture of military and political administration posts. The ultimate prize was to become one of the two consuls in a given year. Each office had a minimum age for election, and there were also minimum intervals between holding successive offices. However, rules were altered and flagrantly ignored in the last century of the Republic. - The Treasurer in today's government has a role most closely related to that of the quaestor in ancient Rome. - The office of Tribune of the Plebs was an important step in the political career of plebeians. Patricians could not hold the office. - The Aediles had administrative responsibilities in Rome, including taking care of the temples, organizing games, and maintaining public buildings in Rome. - Moreover, they took charge of Rome's water and food supplies, serving as judges in mercantile affairs, and overseeing the public works and markets.
