In ‘Othello’, Shakespeare uses settings to depict how Othello’s jealousy stems from his insecurities as a black man in a white Venetian society creating a vital backbone to his concept of a ‘tragic’ play. Characters such as Iago symbolises the prevailing attitudes and beliefs of race by venetian citizens: as foreigners were viewed as outsiders and the fear of interracial marriage are all narcissistic beliefs under the setting of Veince which contributes towards the protagonist’s haramtia, linking to Critic Caryl Phillips’ idea that "Othello feels constantly threatened and profoundly insecure” which the audience can clearly see throughout the play the brutal effects of his insecurities under the toxic cloud of Venice.
