Isolationism is a political philosophy advocating a national foreign policy that opposes involvement in the political affairs, and especially the wars, of other countries. Between the period of 1919-1939, the combination of the Great Depression and the memory of tragic losses in World War I contributed to pushing American public opinion and policy towards isolationism. The growth in American isolationism can be seen through multiple different things, including the USA’s refusal to join the League of Nations, the Neutrality acts that were passed in the 1930s, and the reduction of trade with European countries. However, the USA also pursued a more expansionist policy in some cases, this can be seen in their attempts at worldwide disarmament, economic cooperation with South America, and the several loans given out to European countries.
