3 Pages Essays / Projects Year Uploaded: 2024

The first Labour Government was established in 1924, after a surprise general election called for by the previous prime minister Stanley Baldwin, who was a conservative, called for one over the issue of protectionism. Due to a significant loss of seats; despite a similar amount of total votes and still being the largest party; he stepped down due to being in a hung parliament. The king then called for the second biggest party to form the government. This was the Labour Party and James Ramsay MacDonald was now the Prime Minister. He was a figure of much debate, both now and at the time. It is also important to note he was not only Prime Minister but also the Foregin Secretary, which is very unusual, and also that the Labour party was dependent on support for the liberals as only with them did they have a majority against the conservatives.
