‘A bad luck story of a dommed woman surrounded by gloom’. How far is this an accurate summary of Tess?

During Tess of the d’Urbervilles, bad luck, a gloomy atmosphere and Tess’ doomed nature are all present and thoroughly explored by Hardy. These three elements all link to Tess’ ultimate fate of execution at the end of the novel. In the late 19th century, fate was a prominent concept, so Hardy’s readers would have recognised these factors linking to Tess’ tragic downfall, which is a key element of Aristotle’s Poetics.
