Process where urban settlements become more widespread, physical growth of urban area often results in modernisation and industrialisation. Urban popu: Percentage of total popu living in urban areas, defined by country Urban agglomeration (Tokyo largest): Comprises city or town, and suburban fringe or thickly settled territory lying outside of, but adjacent to, boundaries of city. Gentrification: Getting ppl who moved out back into city. Rate of Urbanisation around world, particularly Asia Measured in two ways: - Percentage of total population living in urban area, defined by country. - Projected avg rate of change of size of urban popu over given period of time Varies btwn countries. USA and UK have higher levels of urbanisation (% ppl living in urban) than China and India but slower annual urbanisation rate bec much less of popu living in rural areas. Singapore’s Urbanisation Intensive industrialisation conducted by EDB and JTC. Public housing devt carried out by HDB. Proportion of built-up area increased gradually. Popu increase, popu density increase, land reclamation increase. Primacy Issue When single, extremely large city dominates the urban popu of country in size, concentration of economic wealth and power (London, Tokyo, Bangkok, Jakarta, Paris, Mexico City. NOT China.)
