Different microorganisms have distinct requirements for growth. Environmental factors also play a role in the growth of microorganisms and these essential requirements varying from species to species. The growth requirements mainly comprise of two parts, nutritional and oxygen requirements, which often directly relate to the successful cultivation of microorganisms. Apart from that, environmental factors such as temperature, pH and anaerobic conditions also dictate if a microorganisms will grow. In this practical, the nutritional and oxygen requirements for the growth of bacteria are investigated by culturing bacteria on different solid nutrient media and at different oxygen conditions respectively. In addition, the effects of various environmental factors are examined by culturing microorganisms at varying temperatures, pH and anaerobic conditions.
