Most diseases and infections are caused by microorganisms and hence is it important for us to identify etiologic agents of diseases. One pathogen may cause a wide spectrum of diseases and conversely, a disease could be the result of infection with any of the many pathogens around. Most importantly, these diseases may become a serious threat when they start to spread and cause widespread epidemics. Hence, it is vital for diagnoctic medical microbiology to identify these pathogens accurately so that drugs can be formulated to counter them. Identification of microorganisms can be done through the direct examination of specimens using microscopy, as well as, a series of biochemical characterization tests carried out in this practical.
